Talk for Writing Process (from Cold Task to Final Invention / Hot Task)

This term we will follow the Talk for Writing approach. This approach helps learners move from imitation to innovation in writing by internalizing language structures and story patterns before creating their own texts.

  1. Cold Task – Baseline Writing:
Learners complete an independent piece of writing at the start of the unit to show their current ability. This helps the teacher identify gaps in vocabulary, grammar, and structure.

  2. Imitation Phase – Learning the Model Text:
The teacher introduces a model text through storytelling, actions, and story maps. Learners memorize and retell it orally, exploring its structure, key vocabulary, and sentence patterns through shared reading and drama.

  3. Innovation Phase – Guided Rewriting:
Learners adapt the model text with teacher guidance—changing characters, settings, or key events while keeping the same structure. This develops confidence and reinforces understanding of text organization and style.

  4. Independent Invention Phase (Hot Task):
Learners apply what they’ve learned to plan, draft, and edit an entirely original piece. This hot task demonstrates progress from the initial cold task, showing mastery of language features and improved writing control.
